CONCRETE "OSCARS" AWARDED FOR NEW JERSEY PROJECTS

While all of Hollywood readies itself for the biggest event of the year, New Jersey's concrete elite were doing just the same. Every year, for 40 years on the second Thursday in May, nearly 700 industry members gather to pay tribute to the finest concrete projects constructed in the state. There, the grand award winners are presented with the concrete industry's version of the Oscar: "Rocky."
Sponsored by the New Jersey Concrete and Aggregate Association and the New Jersey Chapter of the American Concrete Institute, the awards recognize projects completed by the end of 2002 and honor excellence in concept, originality and application of concrete in both design and construction. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges from the concrete industry.
Modeled after Atlas, the Greek methological character that was condemned by Zeus "to hold up the sky forever," Rocky bears the weight of one cubic yard of concrete on his back with the winning project's name inscribed on the front. A statuette constructed, of course, in concrete, Rocky stands 12 inches high and weighs approximately 6.5 pounds. Each member of the grand award project - the concrete contractor, architect, engineer and general contractor - will receive a Rocky. The project winners are as follows:
